The
island Grand Cay is not a typical tourist
island. If you are looking for sand beaches
or sunbeds you will be disappointed. It
has simple bungalows which are integrated
into the everyday life. There is a restaurant
and a bar. The food is always fried and
after one week you will be happy to have
something else to eat. You will not find
any luxury but an easy-going and relaxed
atmosphere.
Usually divers visit Grand Cay if they have
booked a shark week with Erich Ritter's
SharkSchool.
The island has a big harbour and in the
evening a lot of American sport fishers
come to spend the night. You can walk around
the whole island through the village where
you meet local people who are all very friendly.

If
you are on Grand Cay to visit SharkSchool
you will do one dive, have one snorkel trip
and listen to a lecture per day. That means
the whole day is about sharks. In the morning
the small boat drives to a dive site where
you can study the behaviour of the Caribbean
Reef Sharks. With some luck there will be
up to eight Caribbean Reef Sharks around
you.
In the afternoon the boat heads to another
site for snorkelling. As the sharks are
fed the snorkelers have to hold on to a
rope so that they don't get in the way of
the eating sharks. During snorkelling you
can normally encounter Caribbean Reef Sharks,
sometimes Nurse Sharks or even Blacktip
Sharks. It depends on the season which sharks
are around.
You can book and combine one week SharkSchool
on Grand Cay and one week on the Dolphin
Dream. It's recommended to book the trip
in this order. On Grand Cay you can already
see lots of sharks very close but this will
be topped on the Dolphin Dream. A combination
of both is perfect and a must for shark
lovers.
