We visited Layang Layang in May 2003. The island in the South Chinese Sea is not only a military base but also a tourist island.
The resort offers a beautiful pool, a restaurant (where you can eat outdoors and indoors), a bar and the accommodation. The rooms are all equipped with television, refrigerator and air condition - what is really luxurious. Less luxurious is that the rooms are poorly soundproofed what means that you know exactly what your neighbours are talking about…!!!
You will never be hungry on Layang Layang as there is always offered something to eat between the dives. All meals are served as buffet - unfortunately not very varied food but you will get used to that soon.
We found it spectacular that we could go for a walk on the landing strip - an acoustic warning signal sounds as soon as an airplane wants to start or land!!!

The dive center offers a lot of space and the malaysian guides are very friendly and helpful. The dive sites can be reached within 5 - 20 minutes by boat. The boats start three times a day. All dives are drift dives. We had only light current and the visibility was always 30 meters plus.
Layang Layang is an excellent dive area!! We were very much impressed by the intact and healthy underwater world. Besides the beautiful soft and hard corals we could see a lot of "big" life as grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, hammerheads (unfortunately no shoals as the season ended by the end of April), pygmy devil rays, eagle rays, shoals of bumphead parrotfish, shoals of barracudas, napoleon wrasse and turtles. But we won't forget to mention the smaller creatures as leaffish, ghost pipefish or cleaner shrimps.
Unique was the dolphin encounters we had 3 times during the safety stops - we could count up to 10 dolphins revolving around us and enjoying themselves!!!
