Lidl Goes Without Shark Steaks
Lidl stops sale of shark products
The German Discounter Lidl goes without selling shark steaks after massive protests from different animal conservationist organizations and thousands of private persons. The company informed that they will not take back shark steaks in their range of goods in future.
Nevertheless there are still millions of sharks being killed each year for their fins or for other purposes. Visit our Shark Page to get more information about that and what you can do!!

What it was about
150'000 sharks in the cooling counters of Lidl
The German Discounter Lidl offers shark for dumping prices: 880 gram of shark steaks cost 4.49 Euro. The new fact: Shark is sold as a shark - and not under an illusory name.

So far you could buy shark meat in Germany only under fantasy names and in very small quantities. In addition count designations such as smoked rock salmon, smoked dogfish or imitation crab meat (Surimi).

To offer shark meat price-aggressively and offensively now under its real name the shark protection organization Sharkproject sees the raid of the German Discounters as an answer to the shortage of food fish due to the overfishing of the oceans. "Shark meat is to be made presentable", so the organization in a press statement.

The organization fears that the Lidl action can change the demand on the German market lastingly and advance the extermination of the sharks further.
Lidl starts a new dimension of the shark destruction with its shark offer. Approximately 150'000 blue sharks are necessary to cover the need of the 2'500 branches for one week.

World-wide between 100 to 200 million sharks are annually killed. In the first place the cause is the Finning which concerns only the fins of the animals. In the meantime Finning is followed by the increasing meat marketing. This is a relatively recent development since shark meat is usually judged as inferior and still very inexpensive offered in the wholesale.
Also the diving pioneer Professor Dr. Hans Hass sent a personal letter to the owner of the Lidl Company asking him for the future renunciation of shark products. Professor Dr. Hans Hass wrote literally: "I appeal hereby to you as a responsible entrepreneur. Due to your position you can decide to make the sharks to "fair game" and offensively contribute to the extermination of the sharks or you can decide to do without the sales of shark products in the future."
